* Breaking news! Fine Arts Theater Tickets for the FIRST 10 SUBMISSIONS! *

Here's how to submit:

The roadway is 6' x 26 ' = 13' per lane - you could even do a single design that works for both lanes! Or be brave and make a 26' long design. Perhaps use a paper that is 6" x 13" for each lane. 1" = 1'

This needs to be solid colors - NOT blends/fades. Think silk screen. Think Paint by Number. Each shape gets a separate color. We will create a stencil, chalk it in then turn volunteers loose!

Please note the colors of road paint are very limited. Red, Yellow, Blue, Black & White. We will mix and blend, but acrylic paints can confound art school paint blending, so if your design is color dependent, We may produce an unusual result.... Bold colors work best.

Most of the work will be done FAST by volunteers. So a GREAT design will be roller friendly shapes. We have several different widths of rollers - thin to bold line. We will have some round "dot" sponges in two sizes for a cool design element. Remember: Small details may be lost in a crosswalk.

Please NO COPIED ART. No Text.

Examples? See below or look at the two recent murals in town at the Boys and Girls Club and Naylor Court parking area. Both murals were completed by the same amazing artist and both show solid color design ideas.

The theme is up to you, but Maynard-centric might be adored by the jury.

Send submissions by June 17th Midnight EST to: andymoerlein@gmail.com.

Would you like to volunteer to paint? Or help keep painters happy with fresh paint and brushes/rollers? We will need a posse. email: andymoerlein@gmail.com ASAP!

Lovely Hand Painted Crosswalks for Maynard

Sponsored by Maynard Cultural District with CID funds from Massachusetts Cultural Council

Lead Maynard Cultural Council (MCC) Member Andy Moerlein, in conjunction with Maynard as a Canvas Director Erik Hansen.

The design will be selected from a community wide submission process juried by a team selected from the community supporter. The painting will be provided by town volunteers.

Project

We are painting an original design on the crosswalk linking the Fine Arts Theatre and the Naylor Court public parking lots as part of a broader public art effort to incorporate artistic elements into town infrastructure. This initiative will enhance the aesthetic appeal of downtown while forwarding goals of both the Master Plan and the Cultural District. This crosswalk is an inaugural “proof of concept” and is intended to be the first of several Maynard Town crosswalks each year, to be created throughout the town. Maintenance will consist of a bi-annual refreshing coordinated by the MCC

Town staff is supportive of the proposed program and will continue to work with MCC members as future projects are proposed.  DPW Director Justin DeMarco and Planning Director Bill Nemser have been directly involved with this particular project throughout the planning process.

In an inquiry to Chief Noble, he said he will require “police detail being present for the overall safety”. The Maynard Select Board is in support of this community enhancement and on Tuesday April 18th approved the permission to work on Town property as described and approved funds for a police detail for this work. All other aspects of this project are funded and organized as an MCC initiative.

The work will be completed in three summer evenings. First, power wash and roller on a base color, one lane at a time, two coats, all in one evening probably starting at 7pm. We will paint the white side lines 12” wide, two coats - ½ hr apart, adding glass beads to wet top coat (reflector). At the same time painting a six foot wide cross walk in a background color with traction embedded. This first painting will be adult work done by Andy Moerlein and MCC Volunteers. Each lane will require a two hour road closure - one traffic lane at a time. (Routing traffic to single lane.) The final design would be painted over two evenings, focusing on completing one lane each night. The painting must be scheduled when the forecast is dry warm and low humidity so we can best apply this fast-drying paint. The proposal is to do painting on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday to avoid movie foot traffic, since Fine Arts does not have evening movies those three evenings. We plan to start at 7pm for the daylight and lower traffic disruption.

All paint will be a quality, Low-voc Acrylic Latex Traffic Paint. Final paint surfaces will have traction grit and reflective beads added. All media and techniques meet Mr. DeMarco’s DPW specifications.

The road bed is of older age and thus the longevity of this surface is fairly temporary, but any work will be an improvement over current conditions and DPW can refresh the required white edge safety lines in the future without any additional labor.
